What is it?

Skin discovery is a professional assessment of an individual’s skin condition.

It typically involves a visual examination and may utilise specialised tools or technologies to evaluate various skin characteristics. These characteristics can include hydration levels, oil production, pore size, pigmentation, sun damage, and signs of aging (e.g., fine lines, wrinkles). The goal of skin analysis is to gain a deeper understanding of the skin’s current state to inform personalised skincare recommendations and treatment plans.

Who is it for?

Skin discovery is beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including:

  • Those seeking to understand their skin type and concerns better.
  • Individuals looking for personalised skincare product recommendations.
  • People considering cosmetic treatments and wanting to assess their suitability.
  • Those wanting to track their skin’s progress over time, especially when using new products or undergoing treatments.
  • Anyone experiencing specific skin concerns like acne, dryness, sensitivity, or hyperpigmentation.
Contraindications

While generally non-invasive, certain situations might warrant caution or temporary postponement of a more in-depth skin analysis, particularly if it involves certain technologies. These can include:

  • Active skin infections or open wounds: Areas with active infections or broken skin should be avoided during analysis.
  • Recent cosmetic procedures: Individuals who have recently undergone certain treatments (e.g., chemical peels, laser treatments) may need to wait before having a detailed skin analysis.
  • Certain skin conditions: Individuals with severe or highly reactive skin conditions might experience temporary irritation from certain analysis methods. It’s important to disclose any pre-existing conditions.
  • Photosensitivity: If the analysis involves UV light or similar technologies, individuals with known photosensitivity should inform the practitioner.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: While visual analysis is generally safe, the use of certain advanced technologies might be avoided as a precautionary measure.

It’s crucial for the practitioner to conduct a thorough consultation to identify any potential contraindications before proceeding.

How does it work?

Skin discovery typically involves a combination of methods:

  • Visual Examination: A trained professional will visually assess the skin under good lighting, observing texture, tone, and any visible concerns.
  • Palpation: Gently touching the skin to assess its texture, firmness, and hydration levels.
  • Specialised Tools/Technology: Depending on the clinic, various tools might be used, such as:
    • Magnifying lamps: To get a closer look at the skin’s surface.
    • Skin scanners: Devices that use UV light or other technologies to reveal underlying skin conditions like sun damage and oiliness.
    • Moisture meters: To measure the skin’s hydration levels.
    • Sebum meters: To assess oil production.
    • Digital imaging systems: To capture images of the skin for analysis and tracking over time.

The practitioner will use the information gathered to identify the individual’s skin type (e.g., oily, dry, combination, sensitive), analyse specific concerns, and understand the overall health of the skin.

How does it feel?

Skin discovery is generally a comfortable and non-invasive process.

  • Visual and Palpation: These methods involve observation and gentle touch, which are not typically associated with any discomfort.
  • Use of Tools: The sensation from devices like moisture or sebum meters is usually minimal, often described as a light touch or pressure. Skin scanners using UV light might involve briefly looking into a device, which is also generally painless.

The overall experience should be relaxing and informative.

Pre-care & Aftercare

Skin discovery generally requires minimal pre-care and after-care:

  • Pre-care:
    • It’s often recommended to arrive with clean skin, free of makeup or heavy skincare products, to allow for an accurate assessment.
    • Avoid recent exfoliation or harsh treatments that might temporarily alter the skin’s surface.
    • Inform the practitioner about any recent sun exposure or skincare products used.
  • After-care:
    • There is typically no specific after-care required.
    • The practitioner may provide recommendations for skincare products or treatments based on the analysis.
Downtime

Skin discovery has no downtime.

You can resume your normal activities immediately after the assessment.

Treatment Time

The duration of a skin discovery can vary depending on the complexity and the tools used. It typically ranges from 15 to 45 minutes.

Frequency

The frequency of skin discovery depends on individual needs and goals:

  • Initial Assessment: Often recommended as a starting point for anyone seeking personalised skincare advice or considering treatments.
  • Tracking Progress: For individuals using new skincare products or undergoing treatments, follow-up analyses every 3-6 months can help monitor progress and adjust the regimen as needed.
  • Seasonal Changes: Some individuals may benefit from seasonal skin analysis, as skin conditions can fluctuate with changes in weather.
  • As Needed: Individuals experiencing new or changing skin concerns may seek analysis to understand the underlying cause and find appropriate solutions.

It’s important to emphasise that skin analysis is a diagnostic tool to inform skincare and treatment decisions, not a treatment itself. The insights gained can be invaluable for achieving healthier and happier skin. Remember to always consult with a qualified professional for personalised advice and to ensure any treatments are suitable for your individual needs.

“I was starting to see the first signs of aging, and I wasn’t happy about it. Dermapen has been a game-changer. My skin feels firmer, looks more youthful, and the fine lines around my eyes are less noticeable. I’m so glad I decided to try it.”

“I had a terrible bout of acne a few years ago that left me with some deep scars. I was skeptical about Dermapen, but I’m so glad I took the plunge. The treatments were a bit uncomfortable, but the results were definitely worth it. My scars are almost completely gone, and my skin is glowing.”
